Why an assessment of your home and energy systems?

  1. Do you want to get rid of energy inefficiencies in your home, cold drafts, moisture or mold?
  2. Improve temperature control?
  3. Insulate against noise?
  4. Address problems with ice dams and other structural concerns?
  5. Are you concerned about your home contributing to allergies, asthma, or heat related health issues?
  6. Are your energy bills higher than you like? Do you just feel like energy and comfort are being wasted, but you don’t know where, or what to do about it?

A Mass Save Home Energy Assessment can help with all those. It’s‌ ‌no-cost and comes with all sorts of savings!‌ ‌

Virtual‌ or In-person!‌ ‌Due‌ ‌to‌ ‌COVID-19,‌‌ Mass‌ ‌Save‌‌ ‌is‌ ‌offering‌‌ in-person as well as virtual Home‌ ‌Energy‌ ‌Assessments‌.‌ ‌

You‌ ‌can‌ ‌check‌ ‌your‌ ‌eligibility‌‌ here‌‌ ‌and‌ ‌click‌ ‌the‌ ‌Deeper‌ ‌Dive‌ ‌tab‌ ‌for‌ ‌more‌ ‌info.‌ ‌Personalize your energy saving solution here.

Rebates! It will also qualify you for incentives including 100% on air-sealing; rebates off up to $2,750 on qualifying energy-efficient equipment upgrades; no-cost LED light bulbs; showerheads and power strips (sent to your home) if the assessment identifies those; and a 0% loan program for financing HVAC and energy efficiency measures. Best of all, the cost of approved insulation and other weatherization will be 75%-100% covered by Mass Save.

If you had an assessment in the last two years and already have a Mass Save insulation recommendation, you can still qualify for the 75% incentive! Check with the company who did that assessment to check if you qualify, and if you do, the 75-100% incentive will be applied to the existing assessment.

A Mass Save Home Energy Assessment is the first step and will give you a good idea of the energy efficiency of your home currently and help guide you in deciding on actions you can take. You have to actually take action on the recommended measures to reduce the carbon footprint of your home. In the future, we are hoping to provide volunteer energy coaches for those interested in going beyond the Mass Save measures to improve their home’s energy efficiency even more, so stay tuned after your Mass Save recommended measures have been installed!

Steps to Take

In-Person or Virtual assessments (during COVID):

  1. Sign up for a no-cost home energy assessment or call 1-866-527-SAVE (7283) to schedule your IN-PERSON or VIRTUAL Home Energy Assessment with a Mass Save Energy Specialist. Have your electric and natural gas bill account number ready.
  2. You will be asked to provide specific photos or pieces of information shortly before the virtual home energy assessment.
  3. During the home energy assessment, you will likely be asked to show the heating and cooling systems, the attic, exterior walls and basement to determine if any areas need insulation, lights and thermostats.
  4. At the end of the home energy assessment, you will receive recommended actions for property improvements.
  5. You will then schedule a tentative date for any recommended insulation and air sealing. These in-home improvements will only be completed upon your approval and once the state, the Mass Save program, and the vendor are confident that they can do the work safely.
  6. Receive recommended no-cost energy saving products that will instantly save you money (including LED light bulbs, smart thermostats and smart powerstrips), shipped directly to your door for you to install.
  7.  Access generous Mass Save rebates and incentives to make recommended long-term energy-saving upgrades to your home.

Deep Dive

How does this virtual assessment work? The Virtual Assessment will be conducted over the phone for up to an hour. Prior to the call (or during if necessary) you will need to take photos of areas of your home that could be eligible for energy-efficient upgrades. If you cannot take the photos ahead of time, there will be other options at the time of the assessment. If opportunities are found to weatherize or insulate your home at no cost, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled with an installation specialist.

Why is it no-cost to me? As a National Grid or Eversource customer, you have already been paying into this program through your utility bill, so it’s worthwhile to take advantage of it. Thanks to the Green Communities Act of 2008, Massachusetts utilities and energy efficiency service providers that sponsor Mass Save are required by the state to provide energy efficiency programs.

What does a home energy assessment entail? A customized energy report tailored specifically to your home.

Who is going to do the audit and the work? There are two ways to use the Mass Save Home Energy Audit system:

1 – A Mass Save approved Home Performance Contractor can do the audit and the weatherization and insulation. This is a convenient and safe option most people use. Choose your Home Performance Contractor here.

2 – If you want to choose a particular contractor, have a Mass Save Home Energy Specialist perform your audit and choose an approved Independent Installation Contractor from the local list. See the Independent Installation Contractors that are available in your area here

Energy-saving products recommended during your assessment delivered to your door at no cost, and for you to install, such as:

1. ENERGY STAR® LED light bulbs

2. Advanced power strips

3. Low-flow showerheads

4. Faucet aerators

5. Efficient thermostats

Also:

1. Limited time offer for 100% off approved insulation improvements.

2. No-cost targeted air sealing.

3. Generous rebates of up to $2,750 on qualifying energy-efficient heating, cooling, and water heating equipment.

4. The opportunity to apply for 0% HEAT Loan financing for eligible upgrades.

I had one of these a while ago? Can I have one again? If you have not had your home assessed in the last two years, you can have it done again. It may be time to improve your insulation, or check out technologies like smart thermostats, and the incentives for retrofits may have changed as well.
